Perimeter Security Measures for Urgent Sites – A Pending Dilemma

There are practically infinite ways to gain entry – if we ignore the risk that comes with climbing over a physical perimeter fence, if there were no perimeter security measures installed on the premises, then the fence alone would only be a gesture and not meet the requirements for intrusion prevention.

It is undeniable that amongst the site perimeter security systems that have been tried so far the typical infrared sensor only works effectively in a limited environment. Small animals, rain, or plants have long been weaknesses, often causing false alarms. And since the costs for installing and constructing the infrared sensors are proportional to the size of the perimeter, there are already too many setbacks for this plan.

A method that does not use sensor devices for detection would be video security through surveillance cameras. However, although video recordings can be useful as evidence, in order to respond immediately in case of a suspicious person intruding, the monitoring screens must be watched 24 hours a day, or, to work more efficiently, imaging technology such as motion detection has to be used. However, the former requires a considerable amount of effort and personnel costs to have people watch the footage of a huge number of cameras. For the latter case, the angle of view of the surveillance cameras must be set in a wide angle, which is difficult, and it won’t stop false alarms.

It goes without saying that both lack a sense of real operations and have the same disadvantages as the above mentioned infrared sensors with regard to the vast quantities of equipment that needs to be installed, and associated construction costs. In addition, regular patrols by security guards are not a specialized operation of perimeter security measures at all. For example, patrols might help with e.g. the discovery of suspicious objects that were ignored, but since the detection of intruders on the site perimeter is due to accidental factors, it is not a “speculative element” of the measures.

However, the equipment and system specs cannot be superior in every situation on the perimeter. Eventually they are left untouched and always remain a challenge … Overcoming this paradox was an important and critical mission.

This is our “Perimeter Protection Solution” to clear the many problems of perimeter security measures for such sites.

We provide two kinds of systems, one that uses fiber optic cables and one with laser sensors. Both are high end security systems that minimize false alarms caused by small animals, rain or plants, are suited for long-distance perimeters, and immediately respond in case of intrusion.

 

This system tracks the intruder with connected surveillance cameras that have Pan/Tilt/Zoom functions. Laser sensors in the security area project their beams in a fan-like shape or in a circular angle of 360° to detect the presence of intruders and determine their direction and distance. Besides surveillance cameras, intruders are intimidated by alarms such as rotating lights and sirens. The system further has a function to automatically report intruders to the surveillance center.

 

Fiber optic cables are laid on the perimeter fence to detect intruders by the vibration of the fence. The control unit has the ability to identify if the vibration of the fence was caused by a person climbing it or by other factors such as wind or rain. The connected surveillance cameras with Pan/Tilt/Zoom function automatically show the intruded area. As with the laser sensors, it is possible to connect them with different alarms and notify the surveillance center.

Thus, our “Perimeter Protection Solution” is to start out with laser sensors or fiber optic cables to detect intruders, and then add surveillance with Pan/Tilt/Zoom cameras and notifications to the surveillance center.

What is important here is that depending on what is reported to the surveillance center, the security guards will be able to response immediate. With the connected surveillance camera footage it can be checked whether it was a false alarm or not, and the guards responsible for monitoring the intruder can update the mobilized guards on where he is located. This kind of highly efficient and reliable operational support is the core of this system, and we believe that this is the goal of many security systems combining hardware, software, and human mobility.

A sensing controller (control unit) with an overwhelming detection rate

The sensing controller that controls the fiber optic cables collects vibration signals from the fence ignoring vibrations caused by wind or rain, vehicles passing the track or road, etc., and only generates an alarm if the vibrations are caused by a person climbing over the fence. This system’s signal analyzing capabilities are outstanding, with a detection rate of over 95% and a false alarm rate below 3%, making it a highly reliable system.
